This item uses 10 hearts, but can allow the player to recover 6 HP. In addition to the stages, they added a healing item called the 'herb' that drops randomly. I loved seeing the levels that I recognized, and I also loved seeing the new elements being added. That kind of remixing of the original Castlevania made this game a really fun playthrough. While there are a lot of similarities to Castlevania here in terms of some of the level design, there are other areas that are completely new. Overall, I didn't have much trouble with the controls, and I felt like if I died that it was entirely my fault, not due to jank. The slow, plodding stride that is so essential to my Castlevania experience thus far. Definitely sets this game apart from the other games in the marathon so far.ĭespite the game running more smoothly and the increase in enemy speed, Simon still has his signature step. I was really shocked at how fast a lot of enemies move and how many enemies can be on screen at the same time due to the increase in performance. From the improved animations when killing enemies to the more dynamic levels. But yeah, overall really love the graphical improvements here.

The only issue I came across was some slight stuttering before bosses, but that might have been a result of the emulator. So it's no surprise that its presentation is so clean, and the game runs buttery smooth.

Then again, I played the arranged mode which basically means that this game was upgraded and uses the full power of the PS1. I went into this game really having no idea what to expect, and I walked away really impressed. I may go back and play the original mode at some point if I reach my goals during this marathon. I played the Arranged Mode because I heard it's easier. In this game there are two modes, the original mode and the arranged mode. It's a rough reimagining of Castlevania 1 with a lot of remixed levels, items, and enemies. This game was then later ported to the PS1 in 2001, and that's the version I played for my playthrough. Castlevania Chronicles was a game originally released in 1993 for the Sharp 圆8000 Home Computer which was a computer only sold in Japan. Since this game is really not well known, I wanted to do a slight introduction for those that have never played it before. Edit 2: Yeah, you literally just said "Felt like my input was dropped." on Stage 4. Also why the harpies in Stage 3 are giving you trouble. diagonally and the whip swinging feels off. Try pressing down mid-swing to gain more length, that will make some of the wider gaps easier to cross.Įdit: As I'm watching, I'm wondering if your emulator is having control issues, it seems like diagonals aren't registering and that's why you're jumping straight up vs. The tradeoff is that you can whip-swing off any ceiling, so there's lots more places to use it and it can be a useful way to bypass / beat certain enemies. That's one place where SCIV's whip-swing mechanic is better, it's super obvious when you need to use it and it introduces it in an early area that's nice and easy. I'm still watching the stream now and it seems like most of your frustration early on is self-admitted sloppy play and not knowing how the whip-swing mechanic works (and to be fair, it never teaches you AT ALL). I absolutely love Symphony of the Night for example and that game is a cake walk but what you get out of that game is different than the classic level based Castlevania games.Īww, don't say that.

Expectations shift with this series as it goes on, too. 43 year old me has a much different perspective on difficulty and challenge is my point and its not just because of my own experience with the series. Once in my youth and again when it hit the Castlevania Anniversary Collection.įor posterity, I relish challenge in my games and there isn't much that I don't play today at the highest difficulty level (mainly because "Normal" in modern games is mostly easy in reality). I've played through the original Game Boy games twice. Especially coming off of playing the original 3 games dozens of times (1 and 3 are legit hard games for first time players!). I've beaten Super Castlevania IV /alot/ more as I owned it as a kid (I still have a boxed copy, too) and if you had asked 13 year old me? I would have prayed at the altar of how amazing that game was.

For clarity though, I've only beaten Bloodlines maybe four times total? I own a boxed copy of it and have for years but only played through it for the first time a couple of years ago. That's totally fair and I'm certainly not looking to invalidate your opinion either. Click to shrink.Oh I hear ya and yes as a first time player, your views are going to skew in a different direction than my own.
